Hydroponic methods have created ways in which growing in soil is no longer a requirement. It is now possible to grow plants at the south pole and even on the moon. NASA scientists have developed equipment to grow plants in outer space as a means to reduce the high costs of transporting food into space reported to be $10,000 per pound. Growing indoors does present new challenges to provide plants with adequate lighting. Plants will grow if the quantity and quality of light is adequate. It matters as to what kind
of light is present as all light does not promote photosynthesis. More light on light.

Visable light is that light that lies between the wave lengths of ultravoilet and infrared. The light contains all colors of the rainbow from reds to blues. Color temperature is quantatively measured in degrees Kelvin and can be indexed according to the light generated. For example, reddish light is measured around 3500 · Kelvin, where as blue light is 6,000· + Kelvin. Sunlight is in the range of 5,000·+ Kelvin and is the desired light for
vegetative plant growth. The exception is red light of the High Pressure Sodium bulb used during the flowering phases to produce bigger flowers.

Aquamist has gathered three lighting technologies to bring the sunshine indoors. We offer replacement light bulbs, fixtures and accessories to cover a wide range of lighting solutions Starting with special incandescent lighting that is enhanced to produce full spectrum light (sunlight) instead of the usual red spectrumlight. We carry Verilux flourescent lighting also produces full spectrum lighting. These first two types of lighting do not have high intensity but are effective in promoting root growth in cuttings Our most additions to our line include the high intensity metal halide / high pressure sodium lighting.

New developments are creating innovative solutions for horticultural lighting driven by new electronic light drivers. While electronic ballasts have been available for flourescent lighting, technology now have moved on to the Metal Halide and High Pressure Sodium lighting Early testing has shown these lightweight (80% less weight), non heat producing ballasts operate with 35% less energy over the magnetic ballasts. Bulb life is also prolonged with
soft ignition several times longer and represents another cost savings. Other inportant discoveries are being made with this technology and will provide a host new products .
